Dr. Gnanaseelan Chellappan, Scientist G, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology - IITM, Pune, visited NCPOR on 13 February 2026 and delivered an insightful talk titled “Southern Ocean Teleconnections with the Indian Summer Monsoon.” His lecture explored the role of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) in modulating Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR). With the influence of ENSO showing signs of weakening in recent decades, SAM is emerging as an increasingly important predictor of monsoon variability.
The session initiated engaging discussions on advancing predictive understanding of ocean–atmosphere interactions and strengthening climate forecasting capabilities.
