Dr. Bishakhdatta Gayen, Associate Professor, Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (CAOS), IISc Bangalore, visited NCPOR and delivered an insightful talk on “The Ice–Ocean Boundary Layer: The Final Gateway to Antarctic Ice-Shelf Melting.”

The talk highlighted how ocean-driven melting beneath ice shelves influences the stability of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Drawing on simulations, experiments, and observations, Dr. Gayen explained the role of meltwater buoyancy, turbulence, and ocean currents in regulating heat transfer at the ice–ocean interface. He also discussed the well-mixed, stratified, and diffusive–convection boundary layer regimes and emphasized the importance of accurately representing these processes in climate models to improve projections of future sea-level rise.
